How do I do a sugar shake?
You will need a pint size canning jar, a small piece of 8 mesh hardware cloth, and confectionary sugar. Put about 300 bees (about 1/2 cup) in the jar. Then put the canning jar band on with the hardware cloth in place of the lid. Finally, sprinkle them with the sugar (you could put the sugar in the jar before the bees). Gently shake the bees so they are completely covered with the sugar, then a little bit at a time shake the sugar through the mesh lid. Count the number of mites you see in the sugar.
